NOTICE to NRA INSTRUCTOR CANDIDATES
To become an NRA Instructor, you must first complete the NRA Basic Shooting Course for the discipline for which you wish to become and instructor. It does not matter what your level of training or experience is with any other organization, in the military, or in law enforcement, or as a firearms coach or law enforcement instructor - even within the NRA. You MUST take the basic class.
You must also complete the 6-hour NRA Basic Instructor Training Course (BIT) prior to attending your first discipline-specific instructor class. Additionally, you must attend a BIT class within two years of participating in subsequent instructor courses. An NRA Training Counselor may require you to attend BIT with his/her discipline-specific instructor course even if you have completed it within two years. Generally, BIT is the first six hours of an instructor course.
Please check for pre-requisites prior to registering for PPITH, PPOTH, Defensive Pistol, or NRA CCW Instructor Courses. You must be a currently certified NRA BoPS Instructor to attend the PPITH Instructor Course and other pre-requisites will apply as you progress through intermediate and advanced courses.

MISSISSIPPI ENHANCED CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT COURSE [8-Hours]
The Department of Public Safety requires eight (8) hours of handgun safety and basic marksmanship training with at least one (1) hour of instruction regarding firearms laws, which should include instruction regarding "Justifiable Homicide" and "Duty to Retreat", from an authorized instructor in order to receive the "enhanced carry" endorsement, which AUTHORIZES a permit holder to carry his/her concealed handgun anywhere in Mississippi except these places:
(1) A place of nuisance.
(2) A prison, detention facility, or jail.
(3) A police station, sheriff's office, or highway patrol station.
(4) A courtroom during judicial proceedings.
My Enhanced Concealed Carry Class consists of two training sessions - one conducted in a classroom and one conducted on a shooting range. My lesson plan and course of fire are approved by the DPS Firearms Unit for obtaining the enhanced carry endorsement.
The classroom session (PERSONAL PROTECTION ORIENTATION) involves a detailed overview of federal and state firearms laws, as well as principles of personal defense and use of force based on Mississippi's justifiable homicide statute. We will have a detailed discussion about "Duty to retreat" and Mississippi's "Castle Doctrine" presumption, as required by the Department of Public Safety Firearms Unit. We'll also talk about how law enforcement investigations of personal defense cases generally proceed, how the grand jury process works, and how you should prepare yourself for both. We will have a very candid discussion about how you should - and should not - respond to the media during the aftermath of a personal defense event. This presentation is also available as a stand-alone course for groups interested in learning more about their rights and responsibilities as gun owners who have firearms for personal protection.
The range session (BASIC PISTOL SHOOTING COURSE) consists of hands-on shooting drills during which we concentrate on learning and practicing safe gun handling and handgun shooting skills as they relate to defensive handguns and stressful personal protection conditions. Whether you are a new shooter or an experienced handgun enthusiast, you'll benefit from the information and practice offered during this session. Learning and employing the fundamentals of handgun marksmanship is critical to your success with a handgun. Understanding how the physiological effects of stress will alter your ability to perform certain physical and mental tasks will help you maintain your situational awareness and adapt your shooting techniques to guarantee safety and accuracy when they count most. To participate in the shooting session, you will need a defensive handgun and 150 rounds of ammunition, at least two magazines for semi-auto handguns; or two speed loaders or speed strips for revolvers, as well as eye and ear protection.
I have eye and ear protection for those who don't have their own. I also have 9mm Glock pistols available for use during the course if you don't have a gun - you'll just pay me for the ammunition. If you don't own a gun, it'll be best to try a couple different types before making a decision, so not having one should not deter you from this class.
The current state standard for what an instructor presents during an ENHANCED CARRY CLASS is whatever course of instruction he/she has been trained and certified to present, as long as their material has been approved by the DPS Firearms Unit. Be sure any prospective course you may be interested in has been approved. Choose your training source wisely. My professional credentials may be viewed on the BIO page of this web site. After all, it's not just being able to shoot a gun that keeps you safe. The key to survival is having a combination of knowledge and preparation paired with physical skills that allow you to develop tactics that work for you as an individual - tactics that help you avoid confrontations, as well as survive them when you're given no choice. My lesson plan and course of fire have both been approved by the DPS Firearms Unit.

DEFENSIVE HANDGUN SHOOTING for CONCEALED CARRY [3-4 Hours]
This course is for those men and women who plan to carry a concealed handgun on their persons in a strong-side hip holster or holster purse for personal defense - or for anyone who keeps a handgun nearby for personal defense.
This course covers the basic skills and tactics needed to safely carry and employ a centerfire handgun for personal protection. This is not a beginner-level handgun course. If you are new to handguns, I strongly suggest you take advantage of one of my basic pistol shooting courses first. If you have shooting experience and are thoroughly familiar with your handgun and general handgun safety, this course will help prepare you for concealed carry.
Participants with holsters will be required to use a strong-side hip holster or holster purse fitted for their personal defense handgun and must have at least two serviceable magazines for semi-auto handguns or two speedloaders or speedstrips for revolvers. Holster purses, if used, must secure the handgun in a muzzle down or muzzle forward position. Magazine and speedloader holders are not required but recommended. A concealment garment will also be needed. We will discuss equipment selection and use, as well as adapting shooting techniques to compensate for the physiological effects of stress in regular and low-light conditions.
Some of the skills participants can expect to practice are drawing from the holster, accelerated shooting and point shooting techniques, vertical scanning and failure drills, reloading techniques, immediate action drills, pivots and turns, and shooting while moving. A minimum of 200 rounds of ammunition is recommended.

DEFENSIVE HANDGUN SHOOTING for LOW-LIGHT CONDITIONS [3-4 Hours]
National statistics show that violent crime perpetrated by juvenile and adult offenders peaks from 3pm until midnight. If you ever find yourself victim to violent crime, there is a greater than average chance that it will occur during diminishing or low-light conditions. Yet very few people train with their personal protection firearms to prepare for those conditions.
During this course, emphasis is placed on strong-hand-only shooting during diminishing levels of light when the support hand will likely be used in a defensive posture and/or to manipulate a flashlight. We'll cover the effects low-light conditions have on our vision, in addition to stress, such as impairing spatial reasoning (depth and distance) and temporal reasoning (colors and shapes). Other topics include, but aren't limited to, using light conditions to create a tactical advantage, selecting a flashlight suitable for personal defense, flashlight deployment techniques, close-quarters tactics, engaging multiple targets, and proper use of cover and concealment. Participants will need a centerfire handgun suitable for personal protection and two magazines for semi-automatic pistols or two speedloaders or speedstrips for revolvers; a flashlight capable of producing a focused beam of at least 60-80 lumens at 30 feet, 200 rounds of practice ammunition, and at least 5 rounds of personal protection ammunition.

DEFENSIVE PISTOL - GLOCK PISTOLS [4 Hours]
If you like your Glock pistol now, you will love it after attending this course! Whether you are an experienced shooter or a new Glock owner, this course will provide you with a lot of great information and shooting techniques that will benefit you. We'll start the day discussing parts and nomenclature as we detail-strip a pistol and discuss Glock's unique design and function, including the three internal safeties that combine to form the "safe-action" system. On the range, we'll conduct drills that include, but aren't limited to, drawing from concealment from strong-side hip holsters, trigger reset, reloading techniques, immediate action drills for common stoppages, firing one and two-handed from strong and support side cover, shooting from contact, accelerated shooting, and engaging multiple targets in tactical order. There'll also be an introduction to low-light shooting and we'll finish the day field-stripping, cleaning, lubricating, and performing functions checks on pistols. I recommend three magazines and a minimum of 200 rounds for this class.

NRA Basics of Personal Protection in the Home (PPITH) [8 Hours]
This course is great for any Mississippi resident age 18+ who maintains or plans to maintain a handgun in the home (or anyplace you spend the night), in a motor vehicle, or at your place of business or place of employment. The shooting drills, techniques, and tactics are based on personal protection needs in the home, but the legal information is directly relevant to the rights and responsibilities afforded to Mississippi citizens under the state's justifiable homicide statute, which includes the language we've come to know as the "Castle Doctrine". Each participant will bring his/her personal protection firearm and at least 120 rounds of ammunition.
This 8-hour course will share the basic knowledge, skills, and attitude essential to the safe and efficient use of a handgun for protection of self and family, and to provide information on the law-abiding individual’s right to self-defense. Students will learn basic defensive shooting skills, strategies for home safety and responding to a violent confrontation, firearms and the law, how to choose a handgun for self-defense, and continued opportunities for skill development. Students will receive the NRA Guide to the Basics of Personal Protection In The Home handbook, NRA Gun Safety Rules brochure, the Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification booklet, and course completion certificate.
NRA Basic Personal Protection In The Home course is for law-abiding adult citizens, as defined by applicable federal, state, or local law, and experienced shooters (shooters able to show mastery of the basic skills of safe gun handling, shooting a group, zeroing the firearm, and cleaning the firearm) to maximize what can be learned from this course. Proof of shooting experience can be one of the following: NRA Basic Pistol Course Certificate, NRA FIRST Steps Course Certificate, NRA pistol competitive shooting qualification card, military DD 214 with pistol qualification, or passing the Pre-Course Assessment.

Tactical Handgun Shooting [4 Hours]
This course involves shooting from practical defensive positions and using cover; immediate action drills for common stoppages, reloading techniques, threshold evaluations, shooting on the move, and engaging multiple targets and partially exposed targets. This is a great intermediate-level shooting course for anyone who wants to get some trigger time on a challenging course of fire, or for anyone who is interested in an introduction to competitive shooting formats. Any centerfire handgun suitable for personal protection can be easily incorporated into this course. Though a strong-side hip holster will be the safest way to carry unloaded firearms between stages of fire, a holster is not required. I recommend at least three magazines or speedloaders and a minimum of 200 rounds of ammunition for the course.

Tactical Rifle Shooting - AR-Platform Rifles [8 Hours]
This course is suitable for anyone interested in learning more about shooting AR-platform rifles. We'll start our day discussing the parts and nomenclature of the rifle, as well as the basic functions of the operating system(s), and then confirm zero with iron sights or optics, whichever you may have. The rest of the course will involve a review of basic marksmanship fundamentals, reloading techniques, immediate action drills for common stoppages, close quarter shooting drills from contact to 25 yards; and shooting from practical positions while engaging steel targets at 100+ yards using 9-hole barricades. At the end of the day, we'll discuss field stripping, cleaning, lubricating, and performing a functions check on the rifle. If you are not an AR-platform rifle owner but are interested in learning more about them, contact me for information about renting a rifle for the class. Participants will require an AR-platform rifle equipped with a sturdy sling, adjustable iron sights (preferred) or an optic; at least two magazines, a shooting mat, and a minimum 200 rounds of ammunition. Please ensure that you bring the necessary tools to adjust your sights and/or optic, if specialty tools are required.
I am very familiar with the S&W M&P15-22 AR-platform rifle in .22LR caliber and welcome owner/operators to participate in this course.

Learn tips and practice techniques that will enable you to safely and effectively use a shotgun to defend yourself against criminal attack. We'll discuss use of force under "Castle Doctrine" circumstances and as part of "Defend" under the Avoid, Deny, Defend strategy for civilian response to active shooter events. Shooting drills will be specifically designed to optimize the effectiveness of the shotgun as a defensive tool at close ranges. Shotguns may be equipped with any type of sights but must be zeroed prior to class. We will pattern the shotgun at various distances.
Participants will need a shotgun of choice (single, double, pump, semi-auto, etc.), 100 rounds of birdshot, 5 rounds of 00 buckshot, and 5 slugs. Shotguns must have a shoulder stock (no pistol grip-only guns allowed). Participants may also bring a handgun with strong-side hip holster and 50 rounds of ammunition for transition drills.
